Warbler photos, pictures and photography

Finches, Tanagers and Warblers

Warblers are small and active birds, about 4 1/2 to 5 1/4 inches, with thin pointed bills in the Passerine family. There are a quite a few different warblers. The most wide spread and brightly colored is the Yellow warbler. They also come in mostly brownish or dull green colors. Warblers tend to be more easily heard than seen. Identification can be difficult and may be made on the basis of song alone.

Tanagers are small to medium-sized birds. The shortest-bodied species, the White-eared Conebill, is about 3.8 inches long and weighs about 1/4 of an ounce. The longest, the Magpie Tanager is about 11 inches in length and weighs about 2.7 ounce. The heaviest is the White-capped Tanager which weighs about 4 ounces and measures about 9.5 inches in length. Both sexes are roughly the same size and weight. Tanagers are often brightly colored, but some species are black and white. Birds in their first year are often duller or a different color altogether. Males are typically more brightly colored than females. Most tanagers have short, rounded wings. The shape of the bill seems to be linked to the species' foraging habits.

The smallest Finches are the Andean Siskin (Carduelis spinescens). They can be as small 3.8 inches in length and the Lesser Goldfinch weighs as little as a little more than 1/4 of an ounce. The largest species are probably the Collared Grosbeak (Mycerobas affinis) at up to 9.4 inches and about 2.9 ounces and the Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator), weighing in at about 3.0 ounces. Finches typically have strong, stubby beaks, which in some species can be quite large. They are typically inhabitants of well-wooded areas, but some can be found on mountains or even in deserts. Finches are primarily granivorous, but may consume large amounts of arthropods and berries in their diet. Some like the Hawaiian honeycreepers evolved to utilize a wide range of food sources, including nectar.
